The Air Jordan 2009 marked a pivotal evolution in the iconic sneaker line, transitioning from the traditional Roman numeral naming convention to a year-based system, symbolising a new era beyond the revered Air Jordan XX3. Unveiled by Michael Jordan himself, this model was crafted in collaboration with Jason Mayden, Jordan Brand's Senior Footwear Designer, and drew inspiration from the sport of fencing - emphasising agility, precision, and defence. Central to the Air Jordan 2009's innovation was the introduction of Articulated Propulsion Technology (APT), a groundbreaking heel system inspired by carbon fibre prosthetics used by Paralympic athletes. This technology facilitated explosive forward movement and enhanced responsiveness by maintaining ground contact during lateral transitions. The design incorporated a unique TPU chassis on the outsole, influenced by blown glass techniques, ensuring each pair was unique. The upper featured polishable panache leather and satin pleats, merging performance with elegance. Environmental considerations were also paramount; the shoe was developed under Nike's Considered Design ethos, aiming to reduce waste and utilize environmentally preferred materials without compromising performance. Additional design elements included stitching patterns symbolising Michael Jordan's iconic number 23 and heel details referencing his statue at Chicago's United Center. The Air Jordan 2009 debuted with a limited release of 2,009 pairs on January 31, 2009, followed by a nationwide launch on February 14, 2009, priced at $190.
