Originally released in 1998, the Nike Air Max Plus introduced Tuned Air: mechanically targeted cushioning designed to respond to specific zones of footstrike. Designer Sean McDowell’s inspiration came from Florida sunsets and palm fronds, resulting in one of Nike’s most distinctive upper frameworks: wavy TPU overlays over gradient mesh, paired with a rigid arch shank and forefoot Air. The design was as unapologetically technical as it was bold, traits that turned it into a subcultural icon across Europe and Australia. NikeLab’s 2016 “Water Pool” edition removed the aggression - the signature overlays were stripped back, revealing a digitally-printed aquatic pattern across a mesh upper. This sat atop a full white sole unit, including painted Air bubbles. These have grown on me a lot over the years, certainly an acquired taste but a prime example of Nike pushing the boat out and doing something leftfield. Brand new in the box!
