Contrary to popular belief, according to Steve MacDonald the original Air Rift was actually not designed by Kip Buck and Tinker Hatfield. MacDonald states that the Rift was actually designed by a sewer within Nike in the mid 90s, who then seemingly had their design stolen. They were designed with the aim of replicating the feeling of barefoot running. In 2002 'The Untouchable Collection' released, it was the brainchild of Hiroshi Fujiwara and featured a Dunk High Premium, ACG Air Baked, Air Superfly and a previously unseen iteration of the Air Rift. This new Rift had a closed, mid-top construction and was initially released in brown leather and a black leather/pony hair make up. This pair remains in good vintage condition, with some outsole touch-ups. These are getting harder and harder to find, especially in bigger sizes!
