The Air Trainer sky is certainly one of the more elusive running models to come out of this era, this elusiveness paired with its unique colourway, tooling and panelling make it a firm favourite of ours. The upper on the Air Trainer Sky is dissimilar to any Nike model from the period. It features a vibrant yellow breathable mesh that’s overlayed with 3M detailing and bright red branding, a mixture of toned-down grey materials such as textured nylon at the toe and heel and a suede mudguard with a corresponding olive plastic panel. The sole on this pair is remarkable; an almost Lunarlon looking midsole encapsulates Tuned Air technology in the heel and Max Air technology in the forefoot. It was a huge shame to remove the original sole unit, as it truly makes the shoe, but the bubbles were brittle, and the pair was totally unwearable. We had to do this model justice by pairing it with one of Vibram’s craziest soles – the Leaves sole unit. This sole is inspired by natural forms and is in keeping with the original sole in terms of fluid curves and colour.
