React Element 87 [2018]

Nate Jobe and Darryl Matthews led the design of the Nike React Element 87, guiding a project that merged computational data with heritage aesthetics. Their process relied heavily on pressure-map studies of urban commuters, which informed the strategic drilling of varied holes into the React foam midsole to optimise comfort. The shoe features a deconstructed look defined by a translucent TPE yarn upper and an asymmetrical tongue. Matthews drew specific inspiration from the 1983 Nike Internationalist for the eyestays and heel clip, while a cork insole added a natural element to the synthetic construction. Before its global commercial launch, the silhouette was initially unveiled during Jun Takahashi’s Undercover Autumn/Winter 2018 show in Paris.
